Event Celebrates the Anniversary of the First Modern Roller Coaster

Today, June 16, at 2 p.m., Hersheypark participated in the World's Largest Coaster Ride to  celebrate the anniversary of the opening of the first modern roller coaster.  Hersheypark was among 22 amusement parks across North America to dispatch a roller coaster train at the same time.

A group of lucky guests riding Skyrush, which is celebrating 10 years this summer, took part in the new moment in roller coaster history. Check it out below!

The World's Largest Coaster Ride celebrates the engineering, architecture, history, entertainment and marvels of roller coasters that were catapulted into our lives on June 16, 1884, with the opening of the first roller coaster in America at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. Known as a Switchback Railway, it was the brainchild of La Marcus Thompson, traveled approximately six miles per hour and cost a nickel to ride.

American Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE), the world’s largest club of amusement ride enthusiasts, organized the event during World Roller Coaster Appreciation Month to further the importance of preserving and enjoying these treasures.

Take a Coaster Ride at Hersheypark

Hersheypark is home to 15 mild to wild coasters for guests to ride during World Roller Coaster Appreciation Month and beyond, weather permitting. New this summer,  thrill-seekers can take a flavor ride on Jolly Rancher Remix reimagined boomerang roller coaster. Riders of Hershey’s height category (48”) and above blast through the flavor tunnel, invert six times in 90 seconds and jam to sweet tunes. Each ride is different with five randomized flavor rides like Watermelon or Green Apple, complete with different music, lights and scents for an only-in-Hershey sensory experience.

Kickstart your summer and take advantage of the current Buy 2 Get 1 Free online ticket offer before it ends on June 30. The tickets can be used on any public operating day in any season through Jan. 1, 2023.
