HE&R Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month 2023

This year's theme is "Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America"

To kick off Hispanic Heritage Month 2023, the following email was sent to our team members as part of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts' celebrations.

Today, through October 15, 2023, America celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month. This year’s theme is Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America.

2023 Theme
According to UN Advisor Claudia Romo Edelman, “These three themes - prosperity, power, and progress - are all interconnected. Our economic success leads to more power and influence, which, in turn, drives further progress for our community. It's a cycle propelling us forward and an exciting time to be a Hispanic in America.”

History
Hispanic Heritage Week began in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan made the celebration one month. Why do we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month when we do? Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated over 30 days due to the number of Latin American countries like Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua that achieved independence during this timeframe.

What does it mean to be Hispanic, Latino, or Latinx?
Hispanic typically refers to someone with descendants from a Spanish-speaking country, while Latino generally means having ancestry from Latin America. However, it is not that simple. Learn more from NBC correspondent Guad Venegas, who explores the second-largest ethnic/racial group in the U.S.
