ZooAmerica Recognizes National Wildlife Day 2022

Facts and Photos of Pennsylvania Wildlife Found at ZooAmerica

There is no better place to spend National Wildlife Day on Sept. 4, 2022, than ZooAmerica. The North American Wildlife Park is home to more than 200 animals representing  dozens of species from five regions of North America.  Visitors can see a variety of wildlife native to our own backyards in Pennsylvania, including black bears, river otters, bobcats and more.  

Erika J., an Educator Aide at ZooAmerica, captured the following photos of Pennsylvania wildlife found at the Zoo. Read on to learn some fun facts about these animals and plan a visit to ZooAmerica today. The Zoo is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Labor Day and then 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through the end of the month.

Black bears may be all black, a cinnamon color or even blonde in rare instances. Chief (8) is the more typical black color while Murphy (7) is a cinnamon phase black bear. Both bears came from the wild due to human interference.

Bobcats are the only native feline species in Pennsylvania. Pictured is Boy, our 14 year old male bobcat.

River otters can be found in rivers throughout Pennsylvania. The presence of this water weasel indicates that the water is clean. At ZooAmerica, Link and Iris, both 14 years old, can often be found swimming in their pool or snuggled up together on land while they sleep.

Red-tailed hawks can often be seen perched upon power lines watching the nearby areas for small prey items, such as rabbits, squirrels or small rodents. Pictured is PeeWee, a 20-year-old male who came to us from Dauphin County Wild Care Rehabilitation. He suffered a wing injury and was unable to be released back into the wild. ZooAmerica then became his permanent home.

Barn owl numbers have been steadily declining in Pennsylvania over the last several decades. Due to this decline, ZooAmerica constructs, hangs and monitors nest boxes in areas with good barn owl habitat. Stop by to visit our two barn owls in the Eastern Woodlands to learn more about this beautiful species.

White-tailed deer pepper the landscape of Pennsylvania and are always a treat to see! Our two females, Lily and Laurel, are eagerly awaiting apple slices, a favorite treat.

Regular ZoomAmerica admission for guests ages 9-61 is $13. Juniors and seniors are $11 and children 2 and younger are free. ZooAmerica is one of three parks in one included with admission to Hersheypark only when entering the Zoo through the bridge inside Hersheypark during posted Park hours.
