1826 - The Homestead

The Homestead is the birthplace of Milton S. Hershey, and where he would perfect his famous milk chocolate formula. In 1910, The Homestead also served as the first school building and residence for the boys of the Hershey Industrial School, known as Milton Hershey School.

1905 - Original Hershey Chocolate Factory

Milton S. Hershey made his first fortune with caramels, but he made lasting history with the decision to build a chocolate factory and town in what is known today as Hershey, Pennsylvania. It was here that Mr. Hershey transformed America's confectionery market by making chocolate affordable for everyone. For more than a century, the factory was the heart of the community and an iconic symbol of the company. In 2015, the historic building became home to The Hershey Company corporate offices.

1906 - Hersheypark

Milton S. Hershey strongly believed that opportunities for recreation would be critical to the success of his model town. He set aside 150 acres of land for a park that would serve as leisure grounds for the community and his employees. From these hubmle beginnings, Hersheypark has grown into a premier amusement park that welcomes guests from around the world to experience Hersheypark Happy.

1908 - High Point

The home of Milton and Catherine Hershey was named to reflect its location on a hill above the chocolate factory. During their lifetime, the Hersheys often invited the community to enjoy High Point's remarkable gardens. The historic building has also served as home to the Hershey Country Club, as well as corporate offices for Hershey Foods Corporation, now The Hershey Company, and Hershey Trust Company.

1909 - Milton Hershey School

Unable to have a family of their own, Milton and Catherine's dream was to provide a quality education and nurturing home environment for children as part of their legacy. Using the profits from the chocolate company, Milton and Catherine Hershey founded Milton Hershey School (MHS) in 1909. Since then, the lives of thousands of children in need have been transformed through a cost-free education and structured home life. The School currently serves students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, who come from income-eligible families, and has nearly 2,200 students enrolled and boasts more than 12,000+ alumni. 1930 - Hershey Country Club

The first floor of Milton S. Hershey's High Point home served as the original clubhouse, and the golf courses were designed by world-renowned architects. Noted PGA legends, Henry Picard and Ben Hogan served as head golf professionals. Hershey Country Club hosted the 1940 PGA Championship where Byron Nelson defeated Sam Snead 1 up in the 36-hole final. Because of its rich history, Hershey was considered by some to be the “Golf Capital of America.”

1930 - Parkview Manor

Originally constructed as the Hershey Park Golf Course Clubhouse, this historic building has long served the Hershey community. In 1970, Hershey Estates, now Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company, coined the name Parkview Manor and renovated the space to serve as one of its corporate offices.

1933 - The Hotel Hershey

To stimulate the local economy during the Great Depression, Milton S. Hershey commissioned a magnificent hotel inspired by his Mediterranean travels. The project employed more than 800 workers. The Hotel Hershey is known as one of the finest Historic Hotels of America and is a AAA Four-Diamond Recipient.

1934 - Catherine Hall

Named in honor of Catherine Hershey, the school above Hersheypark was originally constructed as a junior-senior high school. It underwent several renovations to meet the growing needs of Milton Hershey School. In 2007, Catherine Hall became the middle school division and welcomed students in grades 5-8 for the first time.

1937 - Hershey Gardens

Set on a hill overlooking Hershey, Hershey Gardens was created at Milton S. Hershey's request to create a "nice garden of roses." Now a dazzling 23 acres, it features colorful theme gardens and a stately collection of specimen trees. The Milton & Catherine Hershey Conservatory, which opened in 2016, features the tropical Butterfly Atrium, which is one of only 25 butterfly atriums in the country with dozens of butterflies on display.

1939 - Hersheypark Stadium

Hersheypark Stadium was one of Hershey's major tourist attractions, known for hosting thrilling automobile races, concerts and high-profile events. The Stadium continues to host world-class talent under the stars.

1967 - Hershey Lodge

Hershey Lodge originally opened as Hershey Motor Lodge. The demand for overnight accommodations rapidly increased and in response, the family resort expanded to add rooms, restaurants, recreation, and convention space. The deluxe accommodations offered at Hershey Lodge helped the town transition to a major entertainment and leisure destination, and today boasts 665 guest rooms and 16 suites.

1970 - Founders Hall

Founders Hall is a tribute to Milton and Catherine Hershey and the many individuals who helped lay the foundation for Milton Hershey School. Visitors to Founders Hall are left with a lasting impression of how the Hersheys' generosity continues to provide for children in need. The illuminated glass rotunda is one of the most iconic elements of the Hershey skyline.

1973 - Hershey's Chocolate World Attraction

Opened to provide visitors with Hershey's-themed confectionery experiences, Hershey's Chocolate World attraction features a free tour ride that offers a "behind-the-scenes look" at how Hershey's famous milk chocolate is made. Guests can celebrate their love of Hershey's all year long with a collection of chocolate and candy-centric attractions.

2009 - The Hershey Story The Museum on Chocolate Avenue

Located in downtown Hershey under the iconic Hershey's Kisses street lights, The Hershey Story takes visitors on an inspirational journey through Milton S. Hershey's lifetime and beyond, a tale spanning more than 150 years of trials and triumphs. Inspired by Mr. Hershey's own candy-making apprenticeship, guests can taste and create all things Hershey.

This year’s celebration will be expanded as the community prepares for the nationwide theatrical release of HERSHEY, a new film chronicling the life and legacy of Milton Hershey, arriving in theaters this Thanksgiving. Starring Finn Wittrock as Milton Hershey and Alexandra Daddario as his wife, Catherine “Kitty” Hershey, the film brings the story of Hershey’s founder and the community and school he created to audiences across the country.

Half-Off Museum Experience Admission

In addition to Milton Hershey’s Birthday Celebration at Chocolate Town Square Park, The Hershey Story Museum will celebrate Milton Hershey’s birthday by offering half-off admission to the Museum Experience on Sunday, Sept. 13. 

The immersive, self-guided experience tells the rags-to-riches story of Milton Hershey, the company he created, the town of Hershey, and the school he and his wife founded for disadvantaged children. In addition to interactive stations that tell the many stories of America’s most famous chocolatier, the Museum Experience features equipment from the original factory, personal artifacts belonging to Milton and Catherine Hershey, vintage Hershey’s packaging, and items from the town’s early years.

Guests can also celebrate Milton Hershey’s birthday by participating in the “Celebration Caramels” Chocolate Lab Class on Sept. 12 and 13 at 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Participants will dip rich butter caramels, made in-house, in milk chocolate and also learn the history behind Milton Hershey’s success and his beginnings in the caramel industry before venturing into chocolate. Ticket purchase is required; children must be at least five years old to participate in a Chocolate Lab class.

Patriotic Summer Celebration at Hersheypark

This summer, Hersheypark went all-out for America’s 250th birthday. My first week in the office was actually spent out in the amusement park capturing content of the America-themed decorations and special Memorial Day events. Among the season-long celebrations was also the inaugural All-American Mascot Day, where over 100 mascots joined the Hershey Characters in a parade, meet and greets and fun! In my role, I escorted local media outlets around the event and captured social media content that reached tens of thousands of people. In fact, the group mascot photo also ran in local and regional media stories!

Hersheypark Stadium Summer Concert Series

As a fan of all things music, having live concerts built into my role was one of the most amazing experiences. I was lucky enough to shadow our entertainment specialist to get a view of all things show-related at Hersheypark Stadium, including operations and media relations. Being a Directioner and country music fan since the age of five, I was so excited to not only attend the Thomas Rhett & Niall Horan show at Hersheypark Stadium, but also get a behind-the-scenes look while escorting photographers and capturing up-close social media content. I absolutely loved this event, and it was one of the greatest opportunities of the summer!

Milton Hershey School Intern Collaboration

As the Communications Intern, I worked in the Hershey Press Building and grew close with the eight other professional interns from marketing and legal as we shared an office for the summer. For a few short weeks in July, the college interns were joined by high school interns from Milton Hershey School (MHS). The 16 of us worked together to create a marketing campaign pitch for the upcoming 125th birthday of Hersheypark. After working on our pitch for two weeks, we had the opportunity to present our collaborative ideas to our supervisors and HE&R leadership the following week, we shared our project with executives within the park and across the company.

While the time spent working with all the MHS interns was incredibly special, one opportunity was even more amazing: the chance to work with my MHS Communications counterpart, Sammy. Sammy and I had such a great time shooting and uploading content together across events and properties!

Networking Opportunities

With 13 hospitality and tourism brands across the destination, I consistently made meaningful connections across all departments and properties in my day-to-day job duties. Additionally, interns were invited to more than ten sessions throughout the course of the summer, which covered diverse topics including workplace inclusion, finance and even our company's Core Purpose of providing value to MHS, where we had the chance to speak with industry leaders within HE&R. Our big networking events included a breakfast at The Hotel Hershey, a luncheon at Hershey Lodge and finally our intern closing reception at Hershey Country Club. While speaking with HE&R team members was an incredible opportunity, networking with fellow summer interns was just as meaningful to me.

Skillset Development

This summer, I gained so much valuable experience in the field of Communications and Public Relations, thanks to the help of my supervisor and the entire Communications team. In my time, I wrote media alerts, created blog posts such as this one, traveled to local news stations and collaborated with the marketing and creative teams. A few of my favorite HE&R brands to capture content for were Hershey Social, since it has playful room for creating reels and fun posts, and, of course, Hersheypark, as it is a nationally recognized and award-winning brand! The team was always happy to invite me along to daily events and reach out a helping hand when I needed it. I am so grateful that the Communications team trusted me in my role, as this opportunity was so special to my personal and professional development!

ZooAmerica North American Wildlife Park is open every day in August for guests to explore a variety of habitats housing North American animals, including a river otter, Canada lynx, gray wolves and a black bear. Hersheypark tickets include entry to ZooAmerica only by accessing the Zoo through the bridge inside Hersheypark during posted Park hours. Those interested in visiting ZooAmerica in the morning before Hersheypark opens must purchase separate Zoo admission tickets online or at the Zoo Admissions Building.

The fur flies when the Hershey Bears score the team's first goal of the game. This year's honor went to defenseman Louie Belpedio at the 2:55 mark of the first period. When the buzzer sounded, a corps of volunteers ascended into the rink to clear the ice and collect the stuffed animals. Players from the Eastern Pennsylvania Hockey group, also known as the "Statie Grays," consisting of Pennsylvania State Troopers, along with the Hershey Eagles, Central Pennsylvania's premier military hockey club supporting active duty, Reserve, Guard, and veterans, joined in the clean-up process along with more than 50 Hershey Entertainment & Resorts (HE&R) team members. Milton Hershey School students and staff members joined additional HE&R volunteers on the GIANT Center plaza to collect and count stuffed animals as fans entered the building. 

At its heart, Hershey's Teddy Bear Toss is about community, kindness, and generosity. Our Bears fans are the best in the American Hockey League! Every year, they raise the bar on what it means to give back. Additionally, more than 100 volunteers from Children's Miracle Network Hershey (CMN) joined HE&R team members to count and bag thousands of plush toys. CMN has benefited from the Teddy Bear Toss for several years. For the past decade, the Sweigart Family Foundation of Lancaster County donated $1 to CMN at Golisano Children's Hospital at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center for every animal thrown on the ice. This year, The GIANT Company stepped in to honor the late Jeff Sweigart, a devoted Bears fan and longtime season ticket holder, to keep his passion alive. The GIANT Company graciously donated $100,000 to CMN. 

On Monday, January 5, 2026, the 81,796 donated stuffed animals were distributed to more than 60 local and regional organizations, including several new groups such as Lancaster Food Hub, Elizabethtown Fire Department, LaMancha Animal Rescue, Hummelstown Fire Department, Helping Hands of Juniata County, and Lucky Dawg Pet Rescue. Dozens of HE&R team members packed cars and trucks, sending smiles across the region. Thank you to our amazing fans and community members for making the 2026 Teddy Bear Toss another wonderful experience!

It underwent several renovations to meet the growing needs of Milton Hershey School. In 2007, Catherine Hall became the middle school division and welcomed students in grades 5-8 for the first time.

1970 - Founders Hall

Founders Hall is a tribute to Milton and Catherine Hershey and the many individuals who helped lay the foundation for Milton Hershey School. Visitors to Founders Hall are left with a lasting impression of how the Hersheys' generosity continues to provide for children in need. The illuminated glass rotunda is one of the most iconic elements of the Hershey skyline.

While many of our guests may know our special connection to MHS, they may not realize that the Hershey's Chocolatetown region at Hersheypark features special projects done in partnership with MHS.

Project Background

At MHS, all students enroll in the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. These classes include areas such as Agriculture/Natural Resources, Automotive Technology, Business/Financial Management, Culinary Arts, and Computer Science. The CTE curriculum gives students the opportunity for hands-on work in the classroom, and via internships and apprenticeships. HE&R is proud to host MHS student interns, co-ops, and apprentices throughout the school year and summer with HE&R team members serving as supervisors in careers aligned with the CTE area.

Over the last several years, MHS students and HE&R mentors have worked on many projects, with a focus on Hersheypark's newest region, Hershey's Chocolatetown. When you visit Hershey's Chocolatetown, be sure to check out this collaborative work. 

1. Milton Hershey School Arrival Experience

Located near Tram Circle in Hershey's Chocolatetown is an interactive arrival experience giving our guests an opportunity to learn more about the School. Just to the left of the Park's main entrance, guests can explore the large digital display featuring all the ways in which MHS honors the legacy of Milton S. Hershey. This digital display includes a tour of the expansive MHS campus, a thorough timeline of the School's history, and offers a detailed look at the opportunities available to students. Guests can also take a picture next to a statue of Sparty, the official mascot of MHS!

2. Ride Elements

Hershey's Chocolatetown is home to three unique dining experiences, and if you look closely, you'll see work completed by MHS students.

Guests visiting The Chocolatier Restaurant, Bar and Patio will notice some elements from the Hersheypark ride collection on the second-story patio. An antique car from the Twin Turnpike attraction, celebrating 50 years in 2025, and three Fender Bender cars were refurbished by MHS Automotive Technology CTE students. Located next to the patio bar, guests are encouraged to sit in them and take photos while enjoying one-of-a-kind views of Hershey's Chocolatetown.

3. Carpentry Project

Additionally, carpentry students from MHS crafted a pair of 10-foot-long tabletops from rough-cut white oak to create twin Founders Tables in the dining room of The Chocolatier. Guests can enjoy lunch or dinner at these stunning tables located near large arched windows that provide an incredible view of the historic Carrousel and the Candymonium hypercoaster.

4. Culinary Offerings

MHS Culinary students, in collaboration with The Chocolatier Executive Chef Rick Larsen and his team, also created the Chicken & Waffles entree found on The Chocolatier menu. The signature dish is inspired by one of Mr. Hershey's favorite dishes when he used to visit the Park - it has also become a guest favorite, too! These same students helped inspire some of the restaurant's mocktail offerings. 

5. Beautiful Front Entrance Landscaping

Hershey's Chocolatetown features a reimagined arrival experience, with a warm welcome gate proudly showcasing our pinwheel logo. Every year, MHS Agricultural and Natural Resources students work with our landscaping crews to harvest and plant special horticulture elements that make the region pop each season.

6. Kisses  Bell

As guests enter Hershey's Chocolatetown, they might see (or hear) the Kisses Bell, located in the four-sided pitched roof tower on the front of the Ticketing Services building in Tram Circle. The custom-designed bell is held up by a beam signed by students at MHS to commemorate their role in developing key elements of the Chocolatetown project and at the heart of our organization's Core Purpose.

This summer, Hershey Entertainment & Resorts (HE&R) welcomed 15 MHS students to immerse themselves in professions of interest as Spartan Summer Interns. During the four-week program, Spartan Interns connect with professionals in various departments across the destination, including engineering, maintenance, culinary, legal, graphics/marketing, retail, and information technology.

Throughout their internships with HE&R, Spartan Summer Interns are exposed to and become familiar with work requirements similar to or related to their areas of expertise. To conclude the experience, each MHS intern presents a final project, sweetest moments and key takeaways from the internship experience at a Career Exploration presentation. HE&R supervisors and MHS student peers from the School’s Year-Round Experience program attend the presentations. 

The Spartan Interns completed several projects in various departments across the company. MHS Interns Alex and Josh worked alongside the maintenance team and were assigned the challenging task of restoring a 23-year-old maintenance cart to a functional condition. Marketing interns Linda, Prince & Taiye focused on different areas within the industry. From experimenting with motion graphics and animation development to researching emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, the marketing interns were exposed to the reality of business operations and all that goes into successfully running a business. 

 A few interns noted that this experience taught them what career they want to pursue, while some interns learned that the industry they have always hoped to work in might not be the best fit for them. In addition to gaining invaluable professional experience to prepare them for future employment opportunities, the MHS interns also experienced the fun side of working at HE&R taking early morning rides on coasters and enjoying donuts with their teams to celebrate legacy team members.

HE&R is excited to play a role in the career development of many incredible MHS students. Through one-of-a-kind opportunities like the Spartan Summer Internship Program, students can grow and make significant impacts not just in Hershey but all over the world.

The floor-to-ceiling mural includes drawings and paintings of various North American animals done by 20 MHS Senior Division Students. The artwork is the foundation of the first-ever mural. The students' drawings and paintings were combined into a larger design that features animals like owls, wolves, eagles, snakes, and turtles and greets Zoo guests upon their arrival. Each student artist received a mural shirt to commemorate their involvement and contribution to the project. 

The partnership between Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company (HE&R) and MHS is just one way that HE&R helps fulfill the dream of its founder, Milton S. Hershey, by providing value to MHS in its mission of helping students lead fulfilling and productive lives - just as Mr. Hershey intended. HE&R also provides value to MHS students and staff through internship opportunities, employment, mentoring, ongoing volunteer engagement and more. 

See the Mural During a Zoo Visit

Visitors can now see the mural in the Admissions building when they arrive at ZooAmerica. The Zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through May 26 and then 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. from May 27 through September 2.

Regular admission for guests ages 9-61 is $16.50 plus taxes and fees. Admission for juniors ages 3-8 and seniors ages 62+ is $14.50 plus taxes and fees. Children 2 and under are free. 

Entrance to ZooAmerica is free to all ZooAmerica Annual Pass Holders and Hersheypark Season Pass Holders. ZooAmerica admission is also included in the one-price admission to Hersheypark only by accessing the Zoo from the bridge inside Hersheypark during posted Park hours. Please note that ZooAmerica and Hersheypark hours vary. Guests interested in visiting ZooAmerica separately can purchase a daily admission ticket online or at the Zoo Admissions building.

Spending Time With Families in Need

Through the team's Hershey Bears Cares community initiative, the team is known to spend time with families in need, up-and-coming hockey players, sick kids and local students. During the regular season, players frequently visited patients and their families at Penn State Health Children's Hospital - including the neonatal intensive care unit, cooked dinner for residents at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central PA, helped families at the annual Cocoa Packs Presents holiday event, took the Calder Cup trophy to emergency medical personnel at the Life Lion hanger, delivered game tickets to servicemen and women and local police and fire personnel and distributed plush toys from the world-famous GIANT Teddy Bear Toss to Vista School and Catherine Hershey School students. Several players spent a Friday evening skating with three American Special Hockey Association teams, including Hershey Heroes, York Polar Bears and Palmyra Sled Hockey. 

Hockey Fights Cancer Initiatives

As part of the team's annual Hockey Fights Cancer game, players visited with patients at the Children's Hospital infusion unit. Players and staff members also visited the oncology floor at Penn State Health's Cancer Institute in partnership with the Leukemia Lymphoma Society's Light the Night event. Adult patients got photos with the Calder Cup trophy and enjoyed meeting several Bears' players. 

Providing Value to Milton Hershey School

Our organization's Core Purpose is to help fulfill the dream of Mr. Hershey by providing value to Milton Hershey School (MHS) in its mission of helping students lead fulfilling and productive lives. Bears' players and coaches spent time with MHS students throughout this season on several occasions. These engagement opportunities were as meaningful for the team as much as the students and teachers at MHS. On one visit, the entire team toured the campus, enjoyed lunch with the MHS senior division hockey team and practiced at the School's outdoor rink. During a middle-division hockey practice, players offered tips to the young team. Whether hosting third-grade students at GIANT Center to learn about hockey-related careers, playing on the  School's playground, or enjoying board games and a math challenge, the Bears frequently engaged with MHS elementary students. The players enjoyed the visits as much as the students! 

Given the upcoming playoffs, the team's community appearances have concluded for this season. The team enjoyed meeting many community members and looks forward to next season's Hershey Bears Cares events and appearances. Thank you for your unwavering support this season. GO BEARS! 

MHS President Pete Gurt and members of the HE&R leadership team greeted the students with cheers as they entered the gallery space. The students shared the inspiration for their pieces and their passion for creating art. A few students noted they wish to be teachers and include art in their curriculum.  Many of the students' teachers joined the celebration, and their pride was obvious. HE&R thanks the MHS students and staff members for helping us beautify our corporate offices. The tremendous work of these talented students inspires us daily, and we look forward to showcasing more artwork in the future.

Cocoa Packs made it a family affair with kids of volunteers and staff members helping decorate.

These countless individuals, businesses, university partners, and friends help MHS students and alumni be their greatest selves by providing resources, opening doors, and sharing unique opportunities. Through their support, our shared mission extends from Hershey, PA, across the globe.

As such, Milton Hershey School’s Founders Day truly is a celebration for all of us.

When most people think of our town, they envision the streetlamps shaped like Hershey’s Kisses, Hersheypark roller coasters that adorn the skyline, and the chocolate factory. What many people do not realize is the town’s amazing history centered around one couple’s vision for a thriving community.

Today, that model town strives to be exactly what the founders intended. MHS continues to partner with many local organizations—including Hershey Entertainment & Resorts (HE&R), which owns and operates Hersheypark, The Hershey Hotel, Hershey Country Club, Hershey Lodge, and more.

Founded in 1927 by our mutual founder, Milton S. Hershey, the core purpose of HE&R is not just to bring smiles to families of all ages but to provide value to MHS in its mission. Today, this is happening in many ways, including: providing students with career-focused education and employment opportunities, offering students intentional life and social skills development and mentoring, and supporting students’ growth of project-based problem-solving skills. On the business end of the relationship, our two companies are collaborating on professional development opportunities for our leaders and managers and activating meaningful marketing strategies across HE&R’s properties to support MHS student recruitment and awareness about the school.      

This list only scratches the surface. MHS students and staff benefit from the diverse and far-reaching support of HE&R. This Founders Day, I am grateful for all that this partnership is doing to impact lives and carry the Hersheys’ mission forward.

More importantly, we want our guests to recognize the tremendous opportunities for students at MHS. As the school continues to grow, MHS is looking to recruit eligible students interested in a top-tier education with one-of-a-kind opportunities. It is our privilege to help spread that message. On this Founders Day, we are proud to collaborate with MHS in unveiling new signage throughout Hersheypark that shares this message. In the new year, we plan to expand these efforts in new and different ways across our other entertainment venues, Resorts, and restaurants.

This important initiative showcases the spirit of community that exists in this sweet town named after a humble, visionary man and his chocolate bar. I am grateful to honor Mr. and Mrs. Hershey and commemorate MHS Founders Day through our extensive partnership with MHS for such deserving children.

President Pete Gurt ’85 welcomed students, staff, and community members to the assembly. He shared the simple ways that everyone in the MHS community can focus on their day 1 and make small changes throughout the school year to ultimately achieve success.

Two students got a very special surprise when their mother joined the assembly in a video message. Member of the Pennsylvania National Guard, Masallah Sema, is currently serving overseas and was joined by her unit to lead the school in saying the pledge of allegiance, after wishing her four children and the entire MHS community a happy start to the school year.

The assembly—which has not been in person since 2019—included more than 150 students, staff, and alumni participants. From celebrating personal bests to sharing stories of overcoming adversity, students, staff, and community members were reminded of the Sacred Values that have guided the school since its founding in 1909—our collective Day 1.

Before the assembly concluded, there was a special presentation announcing Jocelyn Bioh ’01 as the 2022 MHS Alumna of the Year. Bioh—the youngest and first Black woman to earn this distinction—shared a special message to motivate her MHS family.

To close out another unforgettable kick-off to a great school year, Gurt charged the audience to take everything they heard and to apply it to their own lives—one small step at a time.

The 234-plot Hershey Community Garden (HCG) opened in the spring of 2014 as a collaboration of Hershey Impact - Hershey Entertainment & Resorts (HE&R), Milton Hershey School, Penn State Health, The Hershey Company (THC) and The M.S. Hershey Foundation. 

A portion of HCG is devoted to philanthropic purposes. All gardeners are welcome to share excess produce. The largest plot is shared between HE&R and THC. Volunteers from both companies care for the plot, donating produce to people in need in our community. To date, nearly 800 pounds of produce have been donated.

A place where community residents and employees have a place to plant vegetables and flowers while cultivating friendships, HCG is located on the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center campus.

I have been impacted greatly by all that MHS has done for me. August 11, 2014, a day that will always be engraved into my heart, is the day that I enrolled at MHS as a fourth grader. This was the first of many opportunities the school has gifted me. In the fourth grade, I got to play the drums, which I loved to do—something my family could not afford.

In middle school, I got to do so much more. I participated in choir, track and field, tried out for musicals, and even got my first job during my eighth-grade summer. I went on vacation and met the higher-ups at MHS. All opportunities that I would not find anywhere else.

In high school, I found a lot of my passions. I started taking dance classes and joined New Horizons (a show choir). I participated in Model UN, the Student Government Association, and worked at The Project Market. I was also given the opportunity to go to a college camp for a week and intern on the Communications & Corporate Relations team at Hershey Entertainment & Resorts in The Hershey Press Building, all because of the school.

The abundant opportunities at MHS are infinite. I was never afraid to ask because the worst answer was “no,” and the staff at MHS always encouraged me. MHS gave me a home, friends, and life-long connections. All opportunities that I would never have received anywhere else. MHS will always give you the tools to live; you just have to know how to use them.

164 years ago today, Milton S. Hershey, was born in rural Pennsylvania to Henry and Fanny Hershey. His enduring legacy radiates throughout the town he built for his employees and community members, Hershey, PA. Born on September 13, 1857, Mr. Hershey is remembered as one of our country's greatest philanthropists and business innovators. As stewards of the town he built for his employees and community members, Hershey Entertainment & Resorts has the tremendous honor and responsibility of maintaining The Sweetest Place On Earth and continuing the legacy of Mr. Hershey.

HIS GREATEST LEGACY 

In 1909, Milton and Catherine "Kitty" Hershey, founded Milton Hershey School (MHS) with the hopes of helping at least 100 kids in need. Leaving their fortune to MHS, Mr. and Mrs. Hershey ensured that generations of in-need children will receive personal care and comprehensive education that would otherwise be absent from their lives. Today, MHS serves students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade from income-eligible families, has more than 2,300 students enrolled, and boasts more than 11,000 alumni, known as 'Milts.' 

Happy Birthday, Mr. Hershey! Thank you for leaving us with such a tremendous legacy! 

Over the last two years, MHS students and their HE&R mentors have worked on projects with a focus on our newest region of Hersheypark, Hershey's Chocolatetown. Some of the HPP MHS students joined us for the Hershey's Chocolatetown groundbreaking event! This year, three new dining experiences will open at Hershey's Chocolatetown and if you look closely, you'll see work completed by the HPP students including the design of the kid's menu at The Chocolatier as well as making a special table, and refurbishing unique elements of the restaurant. Born to Henry and Fanny Hershey in Derry Church, PA, Milton Hershey was believed to have had a fourth-grade level of education. With an interest in candy-making, young Milton became an apprentice at the age of 14 in Lancaster, PA. After two failed attempts at making candy in Philadelphia and New York, he returned to Central Pennsylvania and successfully opened the Lancaster Caramel Co. in 1886.

Inspired by the innovation he witnessed at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, Mr. Hershey became fascinated with making milk chocolate for the masses - not just as a delicacy reserved for the wealthy. In 1900, Mr. Hershey sold the Lancaster Caramel Co. company for $1 million and turned his focus to making chocolate bars. After the development of a successful formula, Mr. Hershey began to build a factory in Derry Church. With its proximity to farms, Hershey could easily access the fresh milk he needed to produce his chocolate. Shortly thereafter, he began to build what would become the world’s largest chocolate-manufacturing plant, which opened as Hershey Chocolate Company in 1905. 

In the midst of building his businesses, Mr. Hershey met the woman who would become his wife. Catherine often referred to as Kitty, and Milton were married in New York City in 1898. As his company grew, Hershey chose to build a model community where his employees could happily live, work, and play. That town was later named Hershey in honor of its founder.

The Hersheys enjoyed global travel and wonderful experiences, but it was their philanthropic acts that are their greatest legacy. Unable to have children of their own, Milton and Kitty open Hershey Industrial School (now known as Milton Hershey School) in 1909, leaving their entire fortune to ensure it would continue serving students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade from income-eligible families long after they were gone. Today, the School educates, nurtures, houses more than 2,150 students and boasts 10,000+ alumni.

The club's annual Teddy Bear Toss, sponsored by CommunityAid and abc27, was held Dec. 1, and the Bears and their fans smashed their own world record, collecting 45,650 stuffed animals for local charities. ESPN's E:60 crew was on-site in Hershey for two days in December, capturing the event itself, the counting process, and the distribution of teddy bears to children at Milton Hershey School.

"We're thrilled to have worked with ESPN and E:60 in spotlighting our world-record Teddy Bear Toss," said Vice President of Hockey Operations Bryan Helmer. "This event has become a sensation around the world, and the generosity of our fan base and the entire Central Pennsylvania community is showcased in this piece."

The piece is narrated by legendary ESPN hockey analyst Barry Melrose, who is a former NHL and AHL defender and coach. Featured in the story are interviews with Hershey Bears forward Beck Malenstyn, broadcaster Zack Fisch, Brock Kerchner of The Old Barn Hockey Show, and Kyle Mace of ChocolateHockey.com. The piece profiles Gabby Kerchner, a 10-year-old from Mechanicsburg who collected 10,136 stuffed animals for the Teddy Bear Toss as part of her organization, Gabby's Acts of Kindness.ESPN's Scott Cikowski produced the piece.

After months of design and construction by eight MHS carpentry class students, the MHS team delivered the home to Chocolate World. One hundred and seven employees from The Hershey Company then decorated the 8-foot-tall masterpiece, individually placing 41,560 pieces of Hershey’s Chocolate and confections! Twenty four types of sweet building materials were used in all, including the new Kit Kat Duos as accents, Twizzlers Twists as shingles, and Ice Breaker gum adorning the columns.

The time spent building the house is not only a fun mission but more importantly, a worthy cause. For every hour that is volunteered to work on the house - and there were 516 this year - Chocolate World donates $10 to Children's Miracle Network.

The most special part? You can help too! Guests may also donate to CMN through the “Candy Canes for Kids” program. Upon making a donation to CMN (minimum donation: $1), guests may write their name on a candy cane that will be placed around the house. Donations can be made at any retail or food service register at Chocolate World.

The house also provides a great backdrop for photos with Santa, which are offered now through Christmas!

From miniature stuffed animals to life-sized teddy bears, Bears' fans collected or purchased items that were donated to nearly 40 local and regional organizations. The donated items are given to kids and families in need, making the holidays a bit brighter for them. Several Bears players hand-delivered the stuffed toys to local groups including Hope Lodge, Vista School, and Cocoa Packs. Students at  Milton Hershey School (MHS) also received a visit from Coco, the team mascot. Every elementary student at MHS received a stuffed animal and by the smiles on their faces, love their new friends.

The giving does not stop with the teddy bears. Children's Miracle Network at Penn State Children's Hospital (CMN) benefits with monetary donations based on the number of items collected. CommunityAid donates 25 cents per stuffed animal and a long-time Bears club seat holder donates $1 per item collected. CMN Miracle Child Owen was on-hand to throw a few bears, enjoy the game and thank fans for their contributions and support. The Hershey Bears thank the fans, too, as well as the volunteers and team members who made this Hershey Bears Cares event possible. We can't wait to see what next year brings! 

This summer, as part of a nine-week internship opportunity, MHS students interested in Agricultural and Environmental Education collaborated with The Hotel Hershey to learn the business of growing and selling microgreens. They learned how to plant, properly grow and cut microgreens, and they took crops to The Hotel Hershey to conduct a tasting survey with a dozen chefs. Additionally, Chef Mario Oliverio, Executive Sous Chef at The Hotel Hershey, conducted a demo for students on the importance of growing herbs. 

Inspired by an earlier collaboration with the chefs at The Hotel Hershey to plant an herb garden on the hotel property, the summer interns built upon the relationship to learn more about the field of agri-business.

Microgreens are a high-value salad crop. They are used in restaurants to add bold flavor, color and texture. The leafy vegetables are harvested soon after the seeds begin to grow and are used for salads, garnishes, and sandwiches.

MHS started growing microgreens in 2018, but it did not flourish until the collaboration began this summer with HE&R. It took several months to work out the business side of the project, and the first order was placed this fall.

Currently, The Hotel Hershey has a standing weekly order of six types of plants that its chefs use in The Circular, Harvest and Trevi 5. The plants include kohlrabi, garnet red amaranth, popcorn shoot, bean sprouts, spicy mustard greens and micro basil. Guests can find them in a wide variety of dishes, from pizza at Trevi 5 to the popular cocoa-dusted scallops at The Circular. The weekly orders are prepared by an after-school student intern and the MHS plant club.

Through this local partnership and the guidance of staff and HE&R employees, students benefit from hands-on learning opportunities and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) curriculum.

Recently, Kelly Meyer from HE&R was recognized by MHS for going above and beyond in coordinating internships and co-op experiences throughout the destination. For almost five years, Kelly has played an integral role in the CTE program, consistently exceeding what is asked of the committee members. This past year, she was pivotal in placing a record number 26 students at HE&R. 

Congratulations to Kelly on this well-deserved acknowledgment. On behalf of HE&R team members, I thank her for her continued commitment to honoring the legacy of our founder, Milton S. Hershey, by providing value to the students of MHS.

The Hershey Half Marathon is more than just a race. It's become a tradition for many runners and volunteers alike. More importantly, each step of the race gives back to kids, and their families, impacted by childhood illnesses. A portion of the race proceeds goes to Children's Miracle Network at Penn State Children's Hospital (CMN). Our partner for 10 years, an estimated $1 million has been donated to CMN helping kids like Sam, the 2009 and 2019 Miracle Kid/Teen, who is thriving today because of life-saving care he received at Penn State Children's Hospital. 

The race would not happen without the hundreds of volunteers who stuff packets, hand out water, answer questions and cheer on our race participants. Their assistance is invaluable. Thank you to the hundreds of helpers who got up early and waited in the rain to assist our runners! This year, we had helpers from PA Family Support Alliance, Four Diamonds, Aaron's Acres, Ronald McDonald House Charities and, of course, CMN We appreciate everyone who assisted us - including our team members from Hershey Entertainment & Resorts!

1. Milton Hershey’s incredible legacy

Most people know about the chocolate and the amazing Hersheypark, but Milton Hershey has a much more extensive biography that only true Hershey, PA, insiders tend to know. When Milton and his beloved wife Kitty found out they couldn’t have children of their own they decided to open a boarding school for orphaned boys. Known today as Milton Hershey School (MHS), it now takes in both male and female students from a wide variety of backgrounds. In addition to providing academics, the school covers all other expenses for students - including living arrangements with houseparents, clothing, and groceries.

After Kitty’s untimely death in 1915, Milton Hershey gave his entire self-made fortune to the school via The Hershey Trust Company, which to this day still owns controlling interest of both The Hershey Company and Hershey Entertainment & Resorts. The next time you purchase a Hershey’s Bar at the grocery store flip it over. I am sure you never even noticed, but the packaging actually includes a photo of Milton himself with one of the first MHS boys in his arms and a message about how your purchase benefits the school. So make sure to keep in mind - when you visit Hershey, PA, anything from buying a ticket to Hersheypark to staying at one of our three official resorts will help provide funding for this incredible school.

2. The Sweetest Place On Earth  name is based on hard facts

Yes, you read that correctly! Derry Township is home to the main 340,000 square foot Hershey Factory - the largest chocolate factory in the world! The Reese’s Factory, where they produce Hershey’s top-selling candy, and part of the original Hershey’s factory are both located right around the corner as well. I actually pass all of these properties on the daily, including the old factory every day on my way to work - it now houses office space for The Hershey Company. With so much candy being made in such a small town, the sugar/air ratio is clearly going to be higher here than anywhere else.

3. Hersheypark  is amazing

Before I moved to Hershey I had only been to Hersheypark once - back in 2007 when I was eight years old. Needless to say, I don’t remember most of that trip, but since coming back years later, I feel as though I have been missing out on this gem of Central Pennsylvania. With my position now I am continuously in the Park - so I can tell you from firsthand experience that it is a cannot-miss destination. 

One Hersheypark ticket grants you entrance into three separate parks! The first being the main amusement park which currently includes more than 70 attractions, 14 coasters (15 by next summer with the opening of Candymonium), and 5 themed sections. The second is The Boardwalk - a fully-equipped water park with over one million gallons of water and 16 attractions perfect for the entire family to enjoy. Last but not least you have ZooAmerica, an 11-acre walk-through zoo. 

4. Even if you don’t have a big sweet tooth, you still have to come for the food

This may come as a shock to you candy-holics out there - but I don’t love excessive amounts of sweets. Thankfully, I discovered that this area also offers anything a foodie could desire. Hershey Entertainment & Resorts alone owns a total of 11 incredible restaurants around the Hershey area. They offer a range of different price points, menus and themes – with options for all ages and tastes. Make sure to check out the Dining in Hershey page to get the insider scoop on each! My personal recommendation: the chicken & pesto pizza on the lunch menu at Trevi 5. I ate it a few weeks ago and have not stopped thinking about it since. 

5. …But yes there is still chocolate EVERYWHERE

Don’t fret, chocolate lovers. There is, by no stretch of the imagination, a shortage of sweets here for you still! Hershey never ceases to amaze me with what they can add chocolate to. You can find it everywhere - including the signature chocolate martinis at Houlihan’s, Devon Seafood + Steak, The Hotel Hershey and Hershey Lodge. Plus, they serve chocolate butter with your bread at Hershey Grill. 

Even our streets are lined with chocolate! Since 1963, Hershey’s main street, Chocolate Avenue, has Hershey’s Kiss street lights that alternate between wrapped and unwrapped. The first day I drove down the street I knew I had officially made it to The Sweetest Place On Earth.

For a few delectable weeks every summer, locals and in-the-know visitors are treated to favorite flavors and rotating surprises at the Spartan Ice Cream Center. Best of all? The delicious summer treat is made by MHS student interns. Through the School's Agricultural and Environmental Education (AEE) program, students learn how to make homemade ice cream and operate the Ice Cream Center. Students have led the charge with designing the labels, promoting the center and ideating on new flavors. We have no doubt that Mr. Hershey would be proud to see the students experimenting with iconic brands from The Hershey Company.

Five Milton Hershey School (MHS) students recently participated in the 2019 Pennsylvania ProStart Culinary Invitational where they worked as a team to test their culinary skills in front of industry leaders. MHS students placed first in the state-wide competition for the fourth consecutive year.

After months of training and preparation, MHS students competed in the Culinary and Management categories of competition. For the culinary event, students successfully created a three-course meal in under an hour using only two butane burners. As part of the culinary competition, butane burners were their only source of heat—they did not have access to running water, electricity, or ovens.

Hershey Entertainment & Resorts (HE&R) Managing Director of the Restaurant Group, Brian Daily, and several leading chefs from HE&R helped to support the students leading up to and throughout the process. They listened to the students presenations and provided guidance and feedback. Their knowledge combined with the skills of the students propelled them to succeed at the competition.

Their gratitude, intent, vision, and enthusiasm continue to inspire the more than 2,000 students on campus and the more than 10,000 graduates who have benefited from their gift.

MHS Community Pays Tribute to Milton and Catherine Hershey During Annual Founders Week Assembly

During the 2018 Founders Week Assembly, the Milton Hershey School community gathered to reflect on founders Milton and Catherine Hershey and celebrate the school that more than 2,000 students call home. The assembly marked the beginning of Founders Week—a week-long, schoolwide tradition that commemorates the Hersheys’ timeless vision and generosity.

To pay tribute to the Hersheys’ gift and the school’s long-lasting history, the Senior Division New Horizons Choir gave heartfelt performances of “Respect” and “The Candy Man.”

During the assembly, MHS alumna Barbara Polk ’84 served as keynote speaker and shared how the Hersheys’ gift impacted her life. She encouraged students to pursue the possibilities ahead of them and created an action plan for how students can show gratitude to others.

“So many people have sacrificed for me, helped me when I was down, and showed me love when I didn’t think I was worthy of it,” Polk said. “With the generosity I experienced as a student at MHS, I have no choice but to live a life of gratitude and to pay it forward. The world needs all of you to show your gratitude to others and to live intentionally.”

Another tradition that occurs throughout Founders Week is the tree-planting ceremony. MHS seniors in the Class of 2019 planted a tree outside Founders Hall to symbolize the legacy they are leaving on campus and the life-changing opportunities they received from the Hersheys.

On Friday, October 19 through Saturday, October 20, 200 Milton Hershey School (MHS) female high school students participated in the third annual Girls Grace event.

The event builds on the character and leadership skills students learn through The Compass Project at MHS. It is an opportunity for female high school students to come together and develop the skills necessary to become strong, successful young women.

Students participated in skill-building workshops focused on money management, hair care, goal-setting, finding your purpose, self-care, body impact, and business women.

The Career and Technical Education (CTE) curriculum at Milton Hershey School (MHS) is an award-winning program that prepares students to graduate both career and college ready by combining real-world learning opportunities with internships and co-op experiences.

Hershey Entertainment & Resorts (HE&R) has been involved in the CTE program for the past several years. Throughout the years, numerous employees have given their knowledge, expertise and time to support the students’ education and growth.

Each year, the CTE Advisory Committee recognizes select individuals who have gone above and beyond in their involvement with the program. This may include conducting classroom lessons, hosting or arranging summer internships or co-op experiences, or facilitating other authentic work opportunities. During this year’s banquet, the committee acknowledged HE&R employees, Matt Hockenbrock a mechanical engineer at HE&R, and Chef Bart Umidi of Hershey Lodge.

According to MHS, Matt has been an invaluable resource to the program for more than five years. Throughout his involvement, he has given countless industry-focused presentations, been an active presenter, student mentor, and has taught design lessons in the classroom.

Chef Bart has been an integral part of the culinary team for several years and works hand-in-hand as a co-op employer, helping to facilitate the opportunity for the Hershey Lodge culinary team to work with the MHS students. In addition, Chef Bart is an invaluable advisor to the ProStart Culinary Competition teams, helping the students refine cooking methods, providing feedback on taste and plate presentations, and more. To date, the team has won the state competition three times!

On behalf of all HE&R team members, we are thrilled to congratulate Matt and Chef Bart on these well-deserved acknowledgements, and thank them for their continued commitment to honoring the legacy of our founder, Milton S. Hershey, by providing value to the students of MHS.

Every October, Chocolate Town, U.S.A. welcomes thousands of runners for the Hershey Half Marathon. The ninth annual race runs through town on Sunday, October 21, 2018. There’s still time to register for this ‘sweet’ race and we’ve outlined the top reasons you should join us:

Throughout their internships these students will have the opportunity to get real world experience and complete hands on projects and tasks, while learning from some of the industry’s best. HE&R is looking forward to having the students on property, and teaching them about their potential future careers.

At the end of the competition, MHS placed 16^th out of 46 teams. The performance, teamwork and attitude they displayed was beyond their years. To celebrate their successful run, the culinary leadership team from Hershey Entertainment & Resorts (HE&R) hosted the five students and instructors at Fire & Grain for a private lunch buffet, followed by a tour of the kitchens throughout Hershey Lodge. The students had the opportunity to ask the HE&R team questions about career paths, goals, culinary schooling and more. To conclude the celebratory lunch, HE&R gifted each student with their own professional knife set to reward them on a job well done.

HE&R had the opportunity to get involved with the MHS students and worked in tandem with their culinary teams to assist in preparing them for these competitions. The culinary team from HE&R thoroughly enjoyed talking to the students and hearing about the competition, their future aspirations and goals.

Known as the “Infinite Class,” the Class of 2018 celebrated its accomplishments and bright futures in front of family, friends, teachers, and staff. Senior Kaylah Bohenek delivered the welcome address and reminded her peers of the family they gained at MHS.

“Milton Hershey School has done so much for me. I came here emotionally unstable, but I’m leaving with a plan and coping methods,” Kaylah said. “Most of us did not know what we came here to get, but we got what we needed. Not only did MHS give us a sturdy foundation, but it gave us a family to lean on when we needed it.”

President Pete Gurt ’85 also addressed the crowd to congratulate the Class of 2018 and recognize their potential to influence the communities around them.

Gurt also surprised the audience by welcoming alumnus Kayvon Asemani ’14, a recent University of Pennsylvania graduate, to the stage to deliver a special Commencement performance.

After being introduced by Chairman of the Board of Managers Bob Heist ’82, the 2018 MHS Alumna of the Year Wendy MacClinchy ’92 provided remarks and reflected on the importance of living a life of service and purpose.

“A life of compassion, generosity, humility, and enduring commitment are principles which permeated all that [the Hersheys] did. That vision is embedded in the charter of this extraordinary school,” said MacClinchy. “Here, our education was not only of the intellect, but also of the heart. The Hersheys knew that neither could be neglected because true success requires both.”

To close the ceremony, senior Felicity Torres shared an emotional farewell address and inspired the crowd to break the labels society has given them and support one another as they overcome challenges and pursue the possibilities ahead of them.

The Class of 2018 joins more than 10,000 MHS alumni, and they have exciting plans for the future.

The Class of 2018 also achieved several honors and accolades that exemplify their commitment to academics, athletics, student leadership, and visual and performing arts. Throughout her tenure with HE&R, McClintock served in a variety of roles including Manager of Business Analysis and Internal Audit, Director of Insurance, Assistant Corporate Controller and Assistant Treasurer. Recently, she led the negotiation of a new five year $150 million revolving credit facility in support of the company’s strategic plan.

2016 Corporate Social Responsibility Summary Issued

(Hershey, PA – November 28, 2017) – Hershey Entertainment & Resorts™ (HE&R) has issued its 2016 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Summary outlining the company’s extensive efforts to make a meaningful and positive impact in the communities where its employees live, work and play. Paying homage to the legacy of the company’s founder, Milton S. Hershey, HE&R views giving back as paramount to its brand.

Throughout 2016, HE&R, its employees and guests contributed more than $2,557,074 in cash, goods, and services to deserving causes within the company’s four CSR pillars: Environment, Community, Workplace and Marketplace & Guest Focus. This total contribution is separate from the company’s ongoing support of Milton Hershey School (MHS) which is central to our core purpose. Contribution to MHS includes the company’s annual dividend to the School, which was $13,884,000 in 2016, and nearly $500,000 in Hersheypark Season Passes and tickets to numerous sporting and cultural events throughout the school year for students, teachers and staff members. Equally important to HE&R’s financial support to MHS is the company’s ongoing efforts in providing personal and professional support to the school’s students through mentorship opportunities, leadership and development programs.

HE&R’s long-term focus on children and families has yielded long-standing partnerships with organizations such as Children’s Miracle Network, Ronald McDonald House, and United Way (UW). In 2016, the company donated more than $486,200 to those organizations. Also, in an effort to help enrich the lives of children, Hersheypark™ donated tickets valued at more than $395,900 to area elementary schools and Give Kids the World, a non-profit organization that exists to fulfill the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses.

In addition to providing to charitable donations, HE&R is committed to working with its employees, guests, and partners to be responsible stewards of the environment. In 2016, the company reduced its water usage by eight percent, and installed electric car-sharing stations at both The Hotel Hershey and Hershey Lodge resorts. The company recycled more than 66.8 tons of cardboard, 109.9 tons of glass and 31.4 tons of plastic and, with a new initiative, recycled more than 23,000 gallons of cooking oil.

The Hershey Community Garden opened in 2014 through a collaboration with HE&R, The Hershey Company and Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center to fund and build a place where community members could plant and harvest vegetables. HE&R shares a plot with The Hershey Company, and with the help of volunteers from both companies, 1,018 pounds of fresh produce was donated to area food banks to help combat hunger locally.

From employee volunteerism, in-kind and monetary donations, sponsorship activations, extensive community partnerships and recycling programs, Mr. Hershey’s example continues through HE&R’s CSR activities today. HE&R provides both financial and human support in countless ways; one of which is an internship program. Makaylah, a senior at MHS, spent time with the Communications teams this past summer. While she was interning with the Communications Team, she had the opportunity to write for Stories.HersheyPA.com. Perfect timing, during the first week of her senior year, Makaylah shares what Milton Hershey School has done for her.

I remember the first time I got a letter in the mail from Milton Hershey School. You could say I was confused. I went online and began to research it and, as you can see, I liked what I found. I signed up for more letters and information, and my mother and I attended one of the informative dinners. After that, everything was set in place. I filled out an application and got set up for an interview.

On April 22, 2013, I came for my interview. 

I went in open-minded and completely nailed my interview. The whole way home I just kept hoping they would call and say I was accepted. On July 12, 2013, my dreams came true. They called and informed me I was accepted and needed to be on campus on August 4, 2013.

Over the last four years, I can honestly say I am truly living a fantasy life. This school has blessed me with dental and medical care, internships, unbreakable bonds, and most importantly, scholarship assistance so I can achieve my goal of going to college. Growing up, I always watched my mother struggle so I knew college would be a hard task for her. Now, thanks to MHS, I can take the stress off her shoulder.

On June 10, 2018, I will be a graduate of Milton Hershey School and off to my next chapter at Millersville University. When I think about it, I could not be more proud to be an alumni and call Milton Hershey School my second home. I could never thank Mr. Hershey enough for all the blessings, opportunities, and overwhelming memories he has given me.

Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Names New Chief Executive Officer

John Lawn to succeed Bill Simpson

June 14, 2017 - Hershey, PA - The Board of Directors at Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company (HE&R) has named John Lawn as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective immediately. Lawn succeeds Bill Simpson, who is retiring at the end of the year and will hold the title of CEO Emeritus until his retirement.

​"Our entire Board is pleased to name as CEO someone with John’s qualifications, experience and most importantly, dedication to HE&R and its mission to support the Milton Hershey School," said Eric Henry, CEO/Chief Investment Officer, Hershey Trust Company and HE&R Board Chair. "Throughout his 13 years with the company, John has been instrumental in its growth and enhanced focus on customer service and the guest experience. The company is well-positioned to continue its growth in the coming years. John is the ideal person to lead this important phase of HE&R’s progression.”

This announcement is the culmination of the succession plan established when Simpson announced his retirement in June 2016 and Lawn was named President in October 2016.

Lawn joined HE&R in 2004 as Director, Food & Beverage, Hersheypark Entertainment Complex. He then served as Assistant General Manager of Hersheypark Entertainment Complex from May 2005 to February 2010. In early 2010, Lawn was promoted to Associate Vice President, Operations earning the Vice President of Operations title in November of that same year. Lawn was named Chief Operating Officer in June 2015 and President in October 2016.

It was an exciting and emotional weekend as 194 students in the Class of 2017 received their Milton Hershey School diplomas during the school’s 83rd Commencement ceremony at Giant Center.

Known as the “United Class,” the Class of 2017 gathered together among teachers, staff, family, and friends to celebrate their accomplishments. Senior Jesper Andersson provided the welcome address and motivated his peers to take advantage of the opportunity for a brighter future.

“We all too often lock ourselves into the mentality that only those in ideal circumstances get chances at success,” Jesper said. “Truth be told, there is no universally perfect situation. The most ideal circumstance you can be in is yours right now.”

President Pete Gurt ’85 also addressed the crowd, specifically the Class of 2017, and encouraged them to not only be present, but to follow through on their actions and strive for success in every aspect of their lives.

“We celebrate with you today because you signed up, you showed up, and you have ended up—and ending up is a habit … Now it is your time to rise up,” Gurt said.

The MHS 2017 Alumnus of the Year, Eric Welsh ’84, provided remarks before senior Alondra Isidro closed the ceremony on an inspiring note. She encouraged the crowd to embrace their mistakes and use failure as motivation to change their outcome—similar to founder Milton Hershey who failed multiple times when he first started his chocolate company.

“It is never too late to be the kind of person you want to be. You have the power to change—to change your outlook and your outcome,” Alondra said. “You are not your circumstances and you are not your mistakes. Instead, your mistakes and your circumstances are here to help guide and redefine you.”

As the Class of 2017 joins more than 10,000 MHS alumni, they have bright plans for the future:

• 65.54 percent—Four-year college
• 13.85 percent—Two-year college
• 8.21 percent—Career/technical school
• 9.74 percent—Workforce
• 2.56 percent—Military

Originally from central Pennsylvania, Grace enrolled at MHS when she was 6 years old after her mom heard about the school from their pastor. She found her niche in the Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) department at MHS, performing with the marching band, taking piano lessons, and participating in Art Media. She also found a love of languages, specifically French – a language she was able to use when she traveled to Eastern Europe as part of the school’s Multicultural and Global Education initiative.

This fall, Grace will be attending Gettysburg College, but she hasn’t picked a major.

“I don’t know what I’m going to major in,” Grace said. “That’s why I’m currently enrolled in the Temple Program at MHS. If I pass all my classes, I’ll earn 17 credits and I’m hoping that will clear some room in my schedule so I can explore different fields at Gettysburg.”

Thanks to academic partnerships like the Temple Program, MHS students like Grace have the opportunity to experience college course work and become better equipped for postsecondary success.

“I’m excited to attend Gettysburg College,” Grace said. “I like their mission because it’s about service and helping others. Their motto is ‘Do great work.’ I really like that.”

“My experience [at MHS] has been life-changing,” Bernice said. “It has made me realize how independent I actually am, and has shown me how strong I can be.”

Throughout middle school and high school, Bernice took advantage of extracurricular activities and learning opportunities by joining the Viva Diversity club, Youth Group, Junior Chapel, Horticulture Club, and National Honor Society. She also developed a fierce work ethic and currently works two jobs—one in the MHS Admissions Office and another off-campus in the local community.

The school’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program also allowed Bernice to explore various career concentrations before discovering her passion for construction. She completed the Construction and Carpentry career pathway and earned two OSHA certifications that will prepare her for the workforce. In the classes of 2012 to 2016, 100 percent of graduating seniors earned at least one industry-recognized certification.

“I like the hands-on nature [of construction],” Bernice said. “You can build something and it lasts.”

Thanks to the school’s partnership with Temple University, Bernice also has taken college courses on the MHS campus and received 17 credits—which gives her more time to pursue her interests when she begins college next fall.

“I want to minor in psychology or sociology, so having 17 credits from the Temple Program will give me more room to get those classes under my belt,” she added.

As a first-generation college student, Bernice will be attending Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, Pennsylvania to study construction management. She hopes to take some of the lessons she learned at MHS, including her positivity and zest for life, and implement them into her college experience.

“MHS has made me a better person. Before I came here, I was shy and had anger issues, but now I’ve broken out of my shell,” Bernice said. “I’m excited to graduate, try new things and meet new people.”

“My entire childhood was music,” said Andre. “If I wasn’t singing, I was playing the drums. I learned [to play] from watching other drummers and from YouTube.”

A few months after arriving at MHS, Andre walked into the band room, found a drum set, and started to play.

“The band director came in and caught me playing,” Andre explained. “I hadn’t played in three months and I was excited. He talked me into playing in the jazz band and after that, so many other doors opened for me.”

Andre found opportunities to play with the school’s praise band, the guitar ensemble, gospel choir, and at local churches.

As a senior, Andre expanded his music skills when he played alongside the 2016 Alumnus of the Year Johnny Mills ’75 during the Homecoming halftime performance. Mills, a renowned musician, discovered his gift for music while at MHS and now lives in Nashville, Tennessee and records with well-known musicians.

“We collaborated over the phone and worked together on techniques I used during my audition,” he said. “With him being there, supporting me, being my dictionary for drumming, it helped. He was one of the primary reasons I felt so confident walking into that audition.”

Andre was accepted to Berklee College of Music. After graduation, he wants to tour the world and play the drums, piano or organ and record music. After that, he wants to teach music and possibly return to MHS.

For MHS students interested in the arts, MHS offers opportunities at each grade level through the Visual and Performing Arts program. They can get involved with band, choir, dance, drama, and art programs, all at no cost to the students or their families.

Bill is the first person outside of Milton Hershey School (MHS) to receive this honor. Moreover, Bill, who plans to retire in January 2018, was cited for the notable legacy he will leave at HE&R including dividend payments of more than $47 million to the School during his tenure and establishing the Company’s core purpose of providing value to MHS. The Joint Boards have noted that Bill has exemplified what a steward of the legacy should be and has consistently acted in a manner that upholds its mission.

Since his arrival to the Company in 1996, HE&R has seen consistent levels of growth. This award solidifies Bill’s dedication to the legacy of Mr. Hershey and the mission of the School.
