Remembering Byron Nelson's Victory at Hershey Country Club
On this day, September 2, 1940, the world of golf experienced a legendary moment right here at Hershey Country Club (HCC)!
The 23rd PGA Championship unfolded on our esteemed West Course, where Byron Nelson clinched the title in a thrilling 1-up victory over Sam Snead. This match play remains one of the most memorable moments in the history of our club, and it’s commemorated with a plaque on the 12th Hole on the West Course. Every golfer who tees off on Hole 12 West is reminded of this significant chapter in the golf industry. In our Golf Shop, we proudly display a 90% replica of the Wanamaker Trophy, the same trophy Nelson won 84 years ago!
Since Nelson’s victory, HCC has remained a premier destination for golf tournaments. We hosted the LPGA Lady Keystone Open in 1987, the Reese’s Cup Classic on our East Course from 1997 to 2004, the 44th PGA Professional National Championship in 2011 and the 51st USGA Women’s Senior Amateur Championship in 2012.
