It’s National Ice Cream Day: My Favorite Holiday

15icecreamI must admit that I really love ice cream. Some close friends and family might even say I have a small problem with moderation when it comes to that fabulous frozen concoction.
Today, Sunday, July 19, is National Ice Cream Day for the year 2015. To mark the celebration, I decided to do a bit of research about my favorite treat and this day of recognition.

Wikipedia says “Ice cream is a frozen dessert made from dairy products (milk, cream or custard) combined with flavorings, sweeteners.”

Just reading that sentence makes me a bit shaky and sends me to find the nearest self-serve location with a bowl and spoon. I must not be alone in that feeling since today IS National Ice Cream Day.

So, who made the decision to proclaim this national holiday?

Further research took me to the answer: President Ronald Reagan. In 1984, President Reagan proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. And so it began.

My search also tells me that Ben Franklin, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were known to be regular eaters of ice cream. Guess I am in good company and should continue to consume my favorite frosty treat.

After all this research, I decided to call the resident experts: the Hersheypark Food & Beverage Team who told me that ice cream is the #1 food served at the Park.

No surprise. The biggest seller is vanilla; gee, my favorite too. There are six locations throughout the 120-acre theme park that sell ice cream and three additional to add to that count: Rita’s, Dippin’ Dots and Premium Frozen Yogurt. As you can imagine, I have visited all locations and due to my love of soft serve, Premium Frozen Yogurt is at the top of my “go to” list. There are so many flavors, so many toppings, and never enough time.

To conclude this posting, I am heading out to Hersheypark right now…… and Premium Frozen Yogurt is my first stop. If you love ice cream as much as I do, please visit the Park’s website for more information about the frozen delight and all the other great foods and beverages that Hersheypark offers.
