Hershey Country Club Honors Legendary Golf Professional, Jay Weitzel, with a Special Clock Dedication

On Friday, June 6, Hershey Country Club (HCC) hosted the Jay Weitzel Clock Dedication. Jay Weitzel was the Head Golf Professional at HCC from 1957 to 1994. When Jay accepted the job, there were no golf carts, the female membership was in the single digits, and there was a demand for expanding the Clubhouse. Under Jay’s leadership, the East Course was built, paths were installed on the courses, women and junior golfers grew in numbers and a brand new Clubhouse was built on Derry Road. In addition to these historic accomplishments, Jay is also known for bringing the shotgun start to central Pennsylvania as well as the idea that golf tournaments could be used to raise money for charities. 

Beyond his dedication to understanding club operations, Jay has an exceptional playing career. A highly accomplished player, he secured numerous championships throughout his professional career and competed in prestigious events such as the PGA Championship, U.S. Open and Pennsylvania Open.

Jim Reed, former Head Golf Professional and close friend of Jay, shared a heartwarming speech during the ceremony, “If Jay was sitting here today, and we asked him ‘what’s the best thing you ever did at Hershey?’ he would probably mention the assistants and others who came up under his leadership. He was proud of that record. He’s a legend in the Professional Golf business. When we talk about golf in Hershey, we’ll always have to mention Jay Weitzel.” 

Jay's influence on golf in Hershey is undeniable. He significantly impacted HCC, the Hershey community and the sport itself, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him. This clock stands as an enduring symbol of his remarkable legacy. We share our gratitude to Jim Reed, the Board of Advisors and all donors for their invaluable contributions. Their efforts have established this memorial as a significant part of HCC history, providing the Weitzel family a lasting place to honor Jay's legacy.
