August represents a particularly special time for Hershey Country Club (HCC) as we celebrate National Golf Month! For more than 90 years, Hershey, Pa., has played a significant role in the golf industry. The Club proudly upholds the legacy Milton S. Hershey created for his model town in 1930. Here are five facts you might not know about HCC’s golf history.
1. Ben Hogan Won His First PGA Tournament at HCC
August 13 marks the birthday of golf legend Ben Hogan. The Club is proudly recognized as the site for his first PGA tournament win at the 1938 Hershey Open. The tournament took place on what is now the West Course, but originally the 9-hole course. Hogan’s connection to the Club extends beyond his first victory. He served as Head Golf Professional from 1941 to 1951, and the Hogan Grill restaurant was named in his honor, celebrating his profound contributions to the Club’s golf legacy.
2. First Juvenile Golf Course Established in Hershey
In 1932, Milton S. Hershey recruited Maurice McCarthy to open the first golf course in the United States exclusively for children under eighteen. The course was built around Spring Creek and featured a log cabin clubhouse decorated with hunting-themed furniture, a fireplace and included locker rooms. This project aimed to introduce local youth to golf and significantly expanded the sport’s influence in Hershey, Pa. In 1969, it was renamed to Spring Creek Golf Course and remains the area’s longest 9-hole golf course accessible to the public.
3. WGL Saw Record Female Participation in 2025
The Women’s Golf League (WGL) has reached a new membership record this year, boasting 139 women. This growth, the largest since the league’s merger in 2019, is attributed to Golf Director Sara Muldoon’s leadership, passion and expertise, which have fostered an inclusive environment for female golfers. The WGL welcomes all female members, including non-golfers who can participate in a 4-hole league, one of the many golf amenities offered by the Club. In addition to the beginner 4-hole league, there is a 9-hole and 18-hole group for women with more playing experience.
4. Hole 17 West Is The Ace Magnet
Since its establishment in 2006, the HCC Hole-In-One Club has inducted 115 golfers onto its prestigious Wall of Fame in the Clubhouse. Hole 17 West stands out as the most common hole for achieving a Hole-In-One at HCC, with 42 golfers joining the list from this location. 2008 saw the highest number of aces, with 11 golfers making the Wall of Fame. For those aiming to secure an ace, Hole 12 and Hole 5 West or Hole 13 East are the next best bet. The Wall of Fame can be found outside the Golf Shop!
5. Golf Course Stars in 1932 Film
Two years after the opening of HCC, High Point Mansion, the original Clubhouse, served as a filming location for “The Gift of Montezuma.” The movie, which was filmed on what was then the tee box of Hole 1, aimed to showcase Milton S. Hershey’s chocolate-making process and the founding of the Hershey Industrial School (now known as the Milton Hershey School).
