HE&R Marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2023

Today the nation recognizes the contributions and celebrates the achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with the commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day (MLK Day).

The 2023 MLK Day theme is ‘Cultivating a Beloved Community Mindset to Transform Unjust Systems.’ According to The King Center, “This theme defines the 2023 King Holiday Observance events and programming while serving as a compass for all the work we will do this upcoming calendar year and beyond.” The King Center continues, “As we witness nations worldwide continue to struggle under the weight of violence, hate and poverty, today’s social, political and economic landscape reveals the urgent necessity of Dr. King’s philosophy and methodology of nonviolence. ”

Dr. King was a trailblazer, a civil rights activist and a humanitarian. In 1963, he delivered his famous “I have a dream” speech. Many of the injustices he referenced in that speech and sought to remove from our national landscape are still present across America today. Although he was assassinated in 1968, Dr. King’s message of nonviolence continues to resonate with those who honor his life and fight for racial equality. Just last week, a new memorial called ‘The Embrace’ was dedicated to Dr. King and his wife, Coretta, in Boston. His beliefs and acts of advocacy continue to help shape our organization's diversity, inclusion and equity efforts. 

Throughout his life, Dr. King encouraged community service. He famously said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” Today, many of our Hershey Entertainment & Resorts team members are giving back to the community on this National Day of Service. From helping local organizations to donating food and personal care items to committing to longer-term volunteerism, our team members are honoring the legacy of Dr. King, as well as our founder, Milton S. Hershey. Thank you for your commitment to our communities and our ongoing efforts to give back to others.
