Get To Know Santa’s Nine Reindeer at Hersheypark Christmas Candylane
The holiday season is right around the corner and Hersheypark Christmas Candylane is already in full swing! For the last 21 years, Santa and his nine reindeer have been making a special stop at Hersheypark Christmas Candylane to visit all of their favorite guests. These friendly animals are more interesting than you may know, and we got the chance to speak with Hersheypark Reindeer Keeper, Denise Snyder, to find out a few tidbits that help explain just how fascinating they truly are.
What do reindeer like to eat?
It's a tough life for reindeer in the wild. Finding food can be difficult in the winter with snow on the ground and very little vegetation. They mostly survive on Lichens, the moss that grows on the rocks and trees. Lichens, also called Reindeer Moss, is rich in vitamins and gives them energy. But of course Santa's reindeer don't have the same struggles. Here at Christmas Candylane we feed them a pellet diet that it great for antlered animals. They also get plenty of their favorite snack, Beet Feed (dried nutritious and sweet beets). When you leave cookies out for Santa, don't forget the reindeer! They would love a nice crispy apple.
Where do reindeer live?
Reindeer are native to the Arctic areas of Europe, Asia and North America. The largest herds of reindeer are in Alaska, Scandinavia and Russia, also known as Lapland. The most famous reindeer live at the North Pole.
What is the difference between a reindeer and a caribou?
Caribou and reindeer differ according to where they live. People in North America call them caribou but people in Europe and Asia call them reindeer. Their size also varies depending on their location.
Do reindeer have distinct personalities?
Absolutely! Just like people, each reindeer has its own unique personality. The ZooAmerica team takes care of Santa's reindeer during the holiday season. Come and see us this Hersheypark Candylane Season! We will be happy to tell you about each and every reindeer.
