Chefs from HE&R Celebrate Milton Hershey School Culinary Students

Aspiring chefs at Milton Hershey School (MHS) finished the school year with an incredibly successful run at the 2018 ProStart Competition. In February, five students won first place in the 2018 Pennsylvania ProStart Culinary Invitational. This first place finish took them to Providence, Rhode Island where they competed in the national competition. More than 350 students from across the country tested their culinary skills in front of a panel of the industry’s best. The students had to prepare a five-minute speech on how they developed the menu. Then, they had less than one hour and two butane burners (as their only source of heat) to create and plate a three-course meal.

At the end of the competition, MHS placed 16th out of 46 teams. The performance, teamwork and attitude they displayed was beyond their years. To celebrate their successful run, the culinary leadership team from Hershey Entertainment & Resorts (HE&R) hosted the five students and instructors at Fire & Grain for a private lunch buffet, followed by a tour of the kitchens throughout Hershey Lodge. The students had the opportunity to ask the HE&R team questions about career paths, goals, culinary schooling and more. To conclude the celebratory lunch, HE&R gifted each student with their own professional knife set to reward them on a job well done.

HE&R had the opportunity to get involved with the MHS students and worked in tandem with their culinary teams to assist in preparing them for these competitions. The culinary team from HE&R thoroughly enjoyed talking to the students and hearing about the competition, their future aspirations and goals.
