Thank you, Workampers: A Behind-The-Scenes Look at Hersheypark Camping Resort

It’s that time of year again – our workampers at Hersheypark Camping Resort (HPCR) are ending their summer season with us. To celebrate, we got together with our eight workamping couples to talk a little bit more about what they do each summer and why they continue to return to HPCR. See their interesting responses below!

Q. Let’s start with the term “workamper” – what exactly does that mean?

A. A workamper is someone who lives and works at a campground or camping resort for a specific amount of time. Some, we were told, can live at various campgrounds year-round, while others workamp during one season out of the year. Our workampers typically stay during the summer season and do housekeeping, maintenance, electric work, etc.

Q. How long have most of you been workampers?

A. Some couples just started workamping this year, while others are completing their sixth year.

Q. What is your favorite part about workamping?

A. The convenience is a big factor for most of our workampers – they live where they work, so there is no traffic, no commute, and no hassle. Others enjoy the opportunity to work while simultaneously traveling the country.

Q. How many places have you been to, and what was your favorite location to workamp?

A. Our workampers have been to between one and six locations, spanning the entire country. While most of our couples say that HPCR is their favorite location to workamp, others mentioned Albuquerque, NM, and several sites in Texas.

Q. Why did you choose HPCR?

A. While the workampers chose HPCR due to its location (it’s less than 4 hours away from most couples’ families), they also appreciate the Camping Resort’s team spirit. They feel that they are really supported while working here, and that’s extremely important to them.

Q. What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not workamping at HPCR?

A. Our couples like to visit Hersheypark, eat at the many culinary locations in town, visit the Farmers Market, gamble at the casino, and go kayaking when they’re not workamping.

Although our workampers have been to numerous locations across the U.S., we’re glad that they chose HPCR this summer. We’d like to say “thank you” to all eight of our workamping couples (Jim & Judy, Steve & Suzie, Keith & Bonnie, Greg & Dory, Rick & Liz, Clarence & Linda, Lee & Mary, and Wayne & Maureen) for their hard work, determination, and passion for the Camping Resort. Without all of you, this summer would not have been successful. We wish you all the best with your next workamping adventure, and we hope that you are able to join us again.
