More than 1,000 orchids on display at Hershey Gardens Feb. 1-3

For the love of orchids showcase includes chocolate-scented variety.

The Milton & Catherine Hershey Conservatory at Hershey Gardens will be transformed into an “orchid oasis” from Friday, Feb. 1, through Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019. That’s when the orchid show and sale, For the Love of Orchids, will be on display. More than 1,000 gorgeous orchids—and one variety that even smells like chocolate—will fill the Conservatory’s Educational & Horticultural Wing.

Provided by the Susquehanna Orchid Society (SOS), the 35th annual orchid show and sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the show is included in admission to Hershey Gardens.

“It’s one of Hershey Gardens’ most colorful indoor shows of the year,” said Megan Talley, administrative and public programs manager. “Guests are amazed at how many orchid varieties there are.”

Fitting for the town that chocolate built, the show will even feature an orchid variety that smells like chocolate—called Sharry Baby! Other rare species and unique hybrids include Vanda, Dendrobrium, Cattleyas and Paphiopedilums.

Never grew an orchid before? Don’t worry! SOS members and orchid vendors will be present to assist interested buyers with selecting orchid varieties that best work with the homeowner’s household environment.

“The SOS members and orchid vendors who will be staffing the show are happy to help guests with selecting an orchid that works for their home, in terms of sun exposure, room temperature and humidity,” added Talley. “It’s a great event for guests who want to learn about different orchid varieties, too.”

For the Love of Orchids is a juried show. A group of experts will select winning orchids and present awards. Several orchids displayed at previous Susquehanna Orchid Society shows have received national recognition by the American Orchid Society.

Orchid societies from Pennsylvania, Maryland and Washington, D.C. will also participate in the annual display.
